Noted saxophonist Phil Barham to play April 14 at Glade dance

CROSSVILLE — Music professor Phil Barham of Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville will perform with the Big Band Sound at its monthly dance, Saturday, April 14, in Fairfield Glade.

Michigan native Barham was called a “brilliant young American saxophonist” by Winds of the UK. A New York Times article said he had the “ability to perform at a dancing rhythm or to blister through a swift rippling melody.”

Barham, who has performed at many international and American venues, will sit in with the 21-member Big Band Sound when it plays for dancing and listening from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Fairfield Glade Community and Conference Center on Stonehenge Drive, north of Peavine Road.

Tickets for the event are $13.75 including tax per person and are available at the Community Center. Reservations can be made, and tickets paid for, prior to the event in person at the Community Center. Reservations by phone may be charged to a credit card. The telephone number is 484-3722. Cancellations made two days before the dance will be given full refunds.

Barham has an undergraduate degree in woodwinds from the University of North Texas, Denton, Texas. His master of music in wind instruments/saxophone is from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan.

He was a clinician under the Yamaha Musical Instruments Performing Artist program. He is presently a clinician for the Selmer Company, noted maker of high quality saxophones. He has been selected to teach at this year’s Tennessee Governor’s School for the Arts at Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro.
