CROSSVILLE —
On Sept. 22, at 3 p.m., the Aztec Dancers Dance Group from Nashville will perform their authentic music, costumes and dance at the National Guard Amory in Crossville as part of the Hispanic Heritage Festival. The performance is the first appearance of the Aztec Dancers Dance Group in Crossville, but they have performed extensively in Nashville.
Aztec dance is an important element in Hispanic culture. Among the Aztecs, music, song, festive costumes and dance played a very important role in their special occasions.
Centuries before the European conquest, a rich music culture flourished in the Aztec capital and the centers of neighboring kingships in the Valley of Mexico and beyond. Interestingly, there was no Aztec word for music. Music was the “art of song” and the musicians did not play but “sang” on their instruments.
To dance was “to sing with the feet." The music and dance portrays elements of Aztec life at all levels.
Come see the Aztec Dancers Dance Group present this intriguing form of music and dance and perhaps even learn to “sing with your feet.” After the dance presentation, the rest of the Hispanic Heritage Festival will provide an opportunity to sample authentic Hispanic food, music and children’s activities. There is no charge for the dance performance.
