Camelot scheduled to open Sept. 10

Nathaniel Hackmann stars as “Lancelot” in Cumberland County Playhouse’s production of the Lerner and Loewe musical Camelot, on the mainstage on Sept. 10 through Nov. 8. The exciting young San Francisco Opera baritone, seen at CCP as “Emile” (“Some Enchanted Evening”) in South Pacific, will star as “Gaston” in the upcoming 2010 national tour of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

Sponsored by Mariner’s Pointe Resort, Discovery Depot and Tennessee Heart, Camelot also stars Britt Hancock as “King Arthur,”  fresh from the national tours of Hairspray and The Drowsy Chaperone, and Knoxville Opera and CCP leading lady Nicole Begue (who toured nationally in The Pirates of Penzance), sings  “Guinevere,” the role made famous by Julie Andrews.

The legend of Arthur, Guinevere and Lancelot is among the world’s timeless stories and Camelot among the most beloved musicals, with kings and queens, and forbidden love among the royals a millennium ago. “It’s one of the archetypal tales of honor and idealism, of fate and human frailty,” notes Camelot director John Fionte, “with brilliant book, music and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe.”

Camelot opened in 1960 on Broadway and won four Tony Awards, with Richard Burton’s musical debut as Arthur and Robert Goulet’s Broadway debut as Lancelot. The cast album was America's top-selling LP for 60 weeks, with President and Mrs. Kennedy as fans, which Mrs. Kennedy revealed after JFK’s assassination.

Tickets for Camelot and all shows in the Playhouse’s rotating rep schedule are online at www.ccplayhouse.com and by phone at 484-5000. Summer shows include Hairspray; Smoke on the Mountain, sponsored by Cracker Barrel Old Country Store; The Foreigner, sponsored by Comfort Suites, Holiday Inn Express, and Hampton Inn; Return to the Forbidden Planet, sponsored by Crossville, Inc., and Showtime at First Baptist.
