Southern Stars Symphonic Brass 'Going Around the World!'
The Southern Stars Symphonic Brass (SSSB) will be presenting the second concert of their three concert Crossville Music Series on Sunday, Jan. 24, at 3:30 p.m. at the Stone Memorial High School auditorium.
"Tickets to this concert would make great stocking stuffers for this Christmas and holiday season," said Dwight Wages.
Their Oct. 4 concert at Fairfield Glade's Conference Center was a sellout, with nearly 500 in attendance for a concert themed around "Brass Goes to Broadway." As has been the case for every concert they have given, the audience went away extremely impressed with the soloists and the overall professionalism of the entire 30 musician ensemble, which includes top musicians from Knoxville, Chattanooga, Nashville, Cookeville and Crossville.
For the January concert, the theme will be "Brass Goes Around the World," where they will be presenting music from various countries in Europe, Russia and with a few from the U.S. Here are some of the selections that will be presented with their motto of "Premium Entertainment:"
• "Far & Away" (Ireland) — music from the Tom Cruise movie of the same name
• "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty" (Germany) — a sacred hymn tune
• "Dance of the Tumblers" (Russia)
• "Valdres March" (Norway)
• "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" (US)
Other countries represented with selections will be Scotland, England, France, Italy and Spain. The concert will also feature Brandon Jones on a euphonium solo, "Believe Me With All Your Endearing Young Charms," an Eb Alto Horn trio performing Italian arias (the SSSB's own three Tenors!), and Sarah Chumney on the Eb Soprano Cornet (the highest voiced instrument in a brass band) performing "Hymn of the Highlands."
This concert is sponsored by local businessmen that are helping to ensure that music of this quality is available to the Crossville area. They include Dr. Stuart Galloway of Cumberland Eye Care, Gordon Atchley of Farm Bureau Insurance and Vince King of Spirit Broadband.
Ticket prices are $17 for adults and $5 for students. Tickets can be purchased in advance and are currently available at the Cumberland Eye Care in Fairfield Glade and at the First National Bank of Tennessee locations on Main Street in Crossville and Peavine Road in Fairfield Glade. Group sales of discounted tickets will also be available for groups purchasing a minimum of 10 tickets. Contact Candy Castle at 707-0261 about group sales and Dwight Wages at 484-6939 for any other questions.
